Comedian, presenter and alternative music fan Matt Richardson joins Bigmouth to discuss the reality of success, rebuilding his career, accidental TikTok fame, why he just doesn’t understand Radiohead, and why he believes the future of alternative music has never looked brighter.<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Success is a funny thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From the outside, it looks like a finish line. You land a television show, your face is suddenly on screens across the country, and people assume you’ve made it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Matt Richardson, the reality couldn’t have been more different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sitting down with Bigmouth for an honest conversation that covered everything from comedy and social media to pop-punk and Radiohead, one thing became obvious almost immediately: behind the jokes is someone who’s refreshingly honest about the entertainment industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And perhaps that’s exactly why millions of people have connected with him online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“You don’t suddenly feel like you’ve made it.”<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Most comedians spend years chasing their big break.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Matt found his far earlier than most.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Landing The Xtra Factor<\/em> at just 22 years old should have been the moment everything changed forever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead, it simply created a new set of worries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“You get it… but then you’re worried about keeping it. Am I going to do next year? What else can I do off the back of it?”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It’s an insight people rarely hear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While audiences often imagine success as arriving at the destination, Matt explained that the goalposts simply move.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once you’ve achieved one milestone, you’re already thinking about the next.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That honesty continues when discussing money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite presenting one of Britain’s biggest television shows, Matt revealed he earned \u00a345,000<\/strong> for the role.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Enough to make a living.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not enough to retire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It wasn’t like I could suddenly buy a house with no mortgage and never work again.”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Starting Again<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Like most careers in entertainment, things didn’t follow a straight line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After years in television and radio, Matt eventually found himself back where it all began \u2014 performing in comedy clubs around the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Only this time, audiences recognised him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“People would ask, ‘Why are you here?'”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rather than letting pride get in the way, he embraced the challenge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I had to eat a lot of humble pie.”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It wasn’t about proving people wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was about becoming better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I’ve always been a good stand-up… but after COVID I got really good.”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

That confidence doesn’t come across as arrogance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It comes from someone who’s rebuilt themselves from the ground up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why ‘Brash’ Was Worth Every Penny<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Before recording the podcast, I’d watched Matt’s stand-up special, Brash<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It looks every bit like a premium comedy production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It also came with a premium price tag.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It cost me a fortune,”<\/em> Matt admitted, explaining that after paying for the filming, the tour had effectively broken even.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Years ago, comedians invested heavily in the Edinburgh Fringe, hoping television executives might discover them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, the landscape has completely changed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A professionally filmed comedy special on YouTube can introduce your work to far more people than a month at the Fringe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Matt, it wasn’t about immediate profit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was about giving people a reason to discover him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The TikTok Accident That Changed Everything<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Ironically, the biggest turning point in Matt’s recent career wasn’t planned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It happened almost entirely by accident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After spotting himself on a television countdown show he’d completely forgotten filming, he uploaded a short video joking about it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People began asking questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead of ignoring them, he answered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then answered another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before long, millions of people were watching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It was an accident.”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The reason it worked wasn’t clever editing or following trends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was honesty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rather than pretending entertainment is glamorous, Matt openly discussed career setbacks, rejected television pilots, changing income, rebuilding after television and everything in between.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The thing that really helped was being honest.”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Those conversations have now accumulated around 60 million views<\/strong> this year alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Most Overrated Band Of All Time?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Of course, we couldn’t finish without talking music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When asked which band he believes is the most overrated of all time, Matt didn’t hesitate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Radiohead.”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As someone who’d previously argued Arctic Monkeys deserved that title during another Bigmouth interview, I couldn’t help but agree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Matt was quick to explain that he isn’t saying Radiohead are untalented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He simply doesn’t understand the obsession.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It might as well be white noise to me.”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

He even compared them to oysters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Clearly people like them… I just can’t fathom why.”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The conversation soon evolved into something bigger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Music, Matt argued, should be fun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Too often, certain artists become symbols of musical superiority, leaving fans feeling judged simply because they enjoy Green Day, Blink-182 or Good Charlotte more than critically acclaimed favourites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was one of the most entertaining discussions of the entire interview.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Future Of Alternative Music<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

One answer genuinely surprised me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Asked which three alternative bands he’d save if every other band disappeared tomorrow, Matt chose Bring Me The Horizon, Blink-182 and…<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Paradox.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rather than simply naming established legends, he wanted to shine a light on the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I think they could be the next arena fillers.”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

That led into a fascinating conversation about bands like South Arcade and Meet Me @ The Altar, and how modern alternative music has become more experimental than ever before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Electronic influences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Diverse line-ups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A willingness to evolve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Matt, that’s exactly why the scene feels so exciting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I think now is probably the most exciting time for this music since the early 2000s.”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As someone who spends every day covering rock and alternative music, it’s difficult to disagree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
