Turnstile are taking Never Enough into completely new territory, recruiting a frankly ridiculous cast of artists for a reimagined version of their Grammy-winning album.
The Baltimore band have announced Never Enough: The Versions, a new project featuring contributions from artists spanning pop, indie, experimental music and some of the heaviest corners of metal.
Among the names involved are Elton John, Hayley Williams, Dying Fetus, Slayyyter, Panda Bear, Blood Orange, Alex G, Julien Baker, Four Tet, Faye Webster, Angel Du$t and more.
Yes — Elton John and Dying Fetus are appearing on the same Turnstile project.
The reimagined album is set to arrive on August 28, although Turnstile are keeping some of the details under wraps. Exactly which guests will appear on which tracks has not yet been fully revealed, leaving plenty of room for speculation over some potentially wild collaborations.
Turnstile continue to tear down genre boundaries
If there was ever a guest list that summed up Turnstile’s refusal to stay inside one musical lane, this is probably it.
The band’s rise has seen them push far beyond their hardcore roots, incorporating alternative rock, dream-pop and electronic influences while becoming one of the biggest crossover success stories in modern heavy music.
Never Enough pushed that experimentation even further, and The Versions now looks set to completely dismantle whatever genre boundaries were still standing.
The range of collaborators is particularly striking. Elton John is one of the most successful artists in popular music history, while Maryland death-metal veterans Dying Fetus sit at almost the opposite end of the musical spectrum.
Throw Paramore vocalist Hayley Williams, electronic heavyweight Four Tet, Panda Bear, Blood Orange and Julien Baker into the equation, and it’s difficult to predict what The Versions is actually going to sound like.
Which, presumably, is exactly the point.
When is Never Enough: The Versions released?
Turnstile’s Never Enough: The Versions is due to arrive August 28.
With the full artist-to-track pairings still something of a mystery, fans won’t have long to wait to find out exactly how one of rock’s most adventurous bands has put this extraordinary collection of musicians to use.
One thing is certain: there aren’t many albums where you can reasonably expect to encounter both Elton John and Dying Fetus..
