Parton’s family confirmed her death on Tuesday, August 25, in a statement delivered by her nephew Bryan Seaver, who announced the news on behalf of the Parton and Owens family.

It is difficult to overstate the scale of the loss. Parton’s career stretched across nearly six decades, but her place in music went far beyond country. She wrote songs that became part of popular culture itself, including ‘Jolene’, ‘Coat of Many Colors’, ‘9 to 5’ and ‘I Will Always Love You’ — the latter later becoming a global phenomenon through Whitney Houston’s recording.

She was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2022, having initially expressed reservations over whether she belonged there. Her subsequent 2023 album Rockstar saw her embrace rock music directly, working with artists including Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Elton John, Stevie Nicks, Joan Jett, Rob Halford and Debbie Harry.

Across her career, Parton won 11 Grammy Awards, alongside an Emmy and numerous country music honours, while her influence as a songwriter reached generations of artists far removed from Nashville. Her work outside music was similarly substantial, particularly the Imagination Library literacy programme she founded, which has distributed books to children around the world.

On a personal level, this one hits particularly hard at Bigmouth. Dolly’s music has always been a big part of my own family, as it has been for millions of others. There are artists you admire and then there are artists whose songs become intertwined with people, places and memories. Dolly was very much the latter.

The scale of the tributes that will follow will reflect a career that crossed country, pop and eventually rock, but perhaps more importantly, an artist whose music found its way into generations of families.

Dolly Parton was 80.
